A Valier man was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempting to solicit child prostitution after responding to a sting operation conducted by police in Great Falls.
Curtis Aaberg, 59, is charged in Cascade County District Court with attempted prostitution and evidence tampering, both felonies. If convicted of the attempted prostitution charge, he faces up to 100 years in prison with a 25-year mandatory minimum term.
According to charging documents, Aaberg responded to a sting advertisement posted by Great Falls officers on the classified advertising website Backpage.com. When a caller police say was Aaberg professed interest in the posting titled “Barely Legal-18,” he was informed that the girls available were 12 and 15 years of age, court documents say.
He reportedly responded by saying “this sounds like trouble,” and that he had fantasies about that sort of thing but did not want to go to jail.
Aaberg then allegedly traveled to Great Falls and met with an undercover officer to discuss a transaction where he would have sex with the children for money. He ultimately agreed to pay $200 for several sex acts with the fictitious 12-year-old girl, police say.
Before he was arrested by officers involved in the sting operation, Aaberg allegedly deleted text messages related to the conversation he had with the undercover officer. When interviewed after his arrest, he reportedly admitted to attempting to solicit child prostitution.
In his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon, a state public defender said Aaberg is the publisher and distributor of a newspaper in Pondera County and that he had lived there since 1969. The masthead of the July 2014 edition Trader’s Dispatch, published in Valier, lists a Curt Aaberg as a sales representative.
Aaberg, who has no criminal history, had his bond set at $10,000 bond during his initial court appearance Wednesday afternoon.
